In an increasingly technological world books are likely to disappear indeed. Paperback editions are heavier, more expensive and need to be stored in your house, which is not necessarily an easy task to carry out.
Personally speaking, I am hopeful that books will not vanish from our daily environment. They play an important role in terms of transmission. They pass on messages and knowledge from one generation to another. However, some people say they're doomed to disappear. But every cloud has a silver lining: digitization is not incompatible with cultural preservation. Quite the contrary as digitization may be an efficient tool in order to preserve valuable books for the centuries to come. Had it existed before, the library of Alexandria would still hold its wonders, we'd still be able to have access to that source of ancient knowledge, but now they're lost forever.
