To many persons around you, spying may sound a glamorous job.
This is probably due to the fact that James Bond novels and later on movies were extremely sucessful all around the globe. They depicted the most famous spy ever as a glamourous man doing quite an entertaining job. He was always in good company, surrounded by gorgeous women, equipped with high-tech gadgets and weapons. Besides, he would always drive incredible cars making young people all the more jealous. However, let's not forget that James Bond is a fictional character whose good deeds do not necessarily reflect reality. Indeed, what does it mean to be a spy in today's world?
Basically, being a spy consists in collecting evidence, intelligence and report it to the state employing you. It does not imply fancy cars and unlikely forms of technology. On the contrary, being a spy must be the most solitary job in the world. A spy is not supposed to reveal his or her identity, neither are they to reveal their true identity, not even to their family and close friends. A modern spy works in the shadows and should display quietness, discretion and his/her identity must remain secret at all times. In other words, it involves lying to your loved-ones about the true nature of your job. You might even be required to perform sensitive tasks such as getting rid of an enemy, stealing intelligence from other countries.
So although we often consider it a glamourous job, there actually is a dark side to it which should taken into account before embracing this career.
