Is food the only way to discover a foreign culture? (300 words)
Food is undoubtedly one of the most direct ways to discover a foreign culture but it is not necessarily the only one. There are so many different ways for someone to apprehend a new culture.
Needless to say that to experience a new culture first-hand, there is no better way than travelling to the place where that culture is expressed. Travelling has become cheaper over the last decades, whether it is by plane or by train, and consequently more people may have access to new cultures, not just the elite. Of course, it implies curiosity and to some extent an adventurous mind. For some destinations, food is the most efficient way to discover a whole new world – countries with extremely different customs in terms of food such as places where people eat insects. But thanks to (or because of) globalization, there's always a way to escape exotic foods like these if it upsets you.
If you're of the less adventurous kind, you can always resort to cinema, music and literature. Going to the cinema (or theater as the Americans call it) is another interesting way to discover a country's culture. To be even more efficient, people should never forget that original versions are by far the best way to experience international movies and novels.
Music can also be seen as a typical element of a foreign culture. Depending on the instruments used, the voices, etc. it can open up new doors from a cultural point of view. Besides, some musicians have been awarded great prizes like Bob Dylan who received the Literature Nobel Prize.
Finally, I do believe that besides vacationing in a specific place or reading books from or about a particular place in the world, there's nothing that compares with living among the locals. That's what more and more young students decide to experience through the European Erasmus scheme.
In my opinion, spending time abroad should be compulsory and should be part and parcel of school projects.
