BEFORE WE FORGET!
Nowadays, our younger generations, and to some extent their parents as well, tend to consider that WWI and WWII are ancient history. How wrong they are! They have forgotten that nearly seventy years ago, Europe was torn apart and witnessed the Nazis commit a large-scale ethnic cleansing against human beings.
To put a stop to that slaughter / bloodshed, our ancestors had no choice but to take up arms and fight the enemy. To ensure our future, they lost their lives. Many of them were scared and unprepared to go to war. Many of them had never been on the battlefield before. So many never came back.
Consequently, let us not forget that if we today live in democracies, we owe it to them. Unfortunately, far too often, we take it for granted. If Europe is finally at peace, it does not mean that war cannot break out again on the Old Continent. International organisations such as the European Union and the United Nations were born from the ashes of war to make sure it will never happen again.
